Hi all,
I am facing an installation issues while installing MFix-23.4 on Linux or windows OS. Soon after running MFix installation command, it shows the following error. Please help me to resolve this issue.

A few comments:

  1. These are not all the same issue! The original poster @JZH reported
    Could not open lockfile ‘E:\Miniforge3\pkgs\cache\cache.lock’
    which I suspect is because E is a network drive. (I have not heard back from the original poster about this issue, so this remains unresolved)

  2. Several others added to the thread because they were seeing a 404 error:

    Note that this is unrelated to the original “lockfile” issue! I encourage users to make forum topics as specific as possible - if the subject had included the actual error message, “Cannot create lockfile” instead of generic “Error when installing”, it would make the help forum clearer and more useful for everyone. Please make your post topics as specific as possible.

  3. Recall that 404 is generic HTTP error code for “Download failed”. These 404 errors are likely due to one of two causes: either the website being temporarily down (this happens from time to time but I’m not aware of any recent outages) OR a stale download URL. Note that the long mfix.netl.gov/s3/XXX URL changes every hour or so, so if you are using an old download code or someone you got from somewhere else, it won’t work. This is to keep only registered users from downloading MFiX. So please make sure your download codes are recent, and do not share them with others. Also avoid posting the download code in any public place. It’s also possible that there was a network glitch on your side.

All users who are having problems installing: please check the output for 404 and if this is seen, grab a fresh download code and try again.

404 is an HTTP “File not found” error - this is almost always caused by using a stale download code. The links on the Download page change periodically. Please grab a fresh download code from the MFiX download page and try again.

I just grabbed a fresh download command and installed MFiX successfully. Please make sure your download command is current. Reload/refresh the download page if necessary.

Sorry, I don’t have any other suggestions. Possibly a network error? Wait a while and try again (with a fresh download code).

I’m having the same problem as you, which may be a Miniforge3 version issue. At first I downloaded the latest version of Miniforge3 23.11.0-0 and installed MFIX with this problem. I uninstalled this version of Miniforge3 and went to Github and downloaded the old version 23.3.1-1 and tried again and successfully installed MFIX. I hope this method will help you.

@ZJUlin - thank you for this extremely helpful comment! Indeed, I just installed the 23.11.0 version of Miniforge on Windows and I’m unable to install MFiX. This is very unfortunate. I will report this to the miniforge maintainers, hopefully this can be fixed soon. You were right to revert to an older version of Miniforge.

However, this failure seems to be somewhat different from the errors previously reported since there is no 404 (File not found) error - it seems to be failing in a different way. I’m not 100% sure but I still think the most likely cause for the 404 is a stale download link.

The “Download Miniforge” links on the MFiX download page have been updated to point to Miniforge 23.3.1-1 which has been tested and verified to work for installing MFiX on all supported platforms.

All users who are having difficulty installing MFiX are encouraged to uninstall Miniforge and try again with this version.
